Floating License Installation Procedures

Server Setup

Floating License Server Requirements

Installation

Note: These instructions are for installing the floating license configuration to be used with SpinFire Professional V2004, Build 818, or later.
If you would like to install or update a floating license configuration to work with earlier versions of SpinFire Professional, see Floating License Installation (SpinFire Pro Build 814 or Earlier).

Determine the build number from the SpinFire Professional menu bar by selecting Help > About.

Please note that you cannot have multiple Seat ID's configured on the same FlexLM server.
That is, if you want one floating Seat ID with Importers, and one without, you will have to install and serve FlexLM on two different servers.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Knowledgebase

Modify Flexlm Port Number

There are times when the intended server is already running a FlexLM server, serving licenses for other Applications.
It is possible that the SpinFire "Port Number" of 27000 is already being used by another application.
As an example, AutoCAD uses this port number as well.
In this case you will have to change the Port Number SpinFire uses to avoid this conflict,
preventing the licenses from being served.
This can be done using the process shown below.

Modify FlexLM Server file

Modify the first line of the “sfpflv2.dat” file as follows;

Change this:

SERVER <Host Name> <Mac Address>

To this:

SERVER <Host Name> <Mac Address> 28000

(Or any number desired)

Modify FlexLM Client file

Modify line 11 of the “license.al” file as Follows

Change this:

               <al:FLEXLMFILE> SERVER <Host Name> <Mac Address>

To this:

               <al:FLEXLMFILE> SERVER <Host Name> <Mac Address> 28000

(Where Port 28000 matches that of the sfpflv2.dat file)

NOTE: You will then have to re-distribute the license.al file to the clients

Floating license troubleshooting

  1. If there is a problem with the licensing, first Stop and Restart the License Server
    • Start lmtools.exe. (Default location: C:\Program Files\Actify\Floating License Manager)
    • Open the the Start/Stop/Reread window
    • Select Stop Server
  2. Check for, and terminate any running floating license processes (lmgrd.exe and actifyd.exe)
    • Open the Task Manger window
    • Do this either by right-clicking the Windows and clicking Task Manger, or by pressing Alt+Ctrl+Delete and clicking Task Manger.
    • Click the Processes tab
    • Click lmgrd.exe
    • Click End Process
    • Click Yes on the Warning dialog box
    • This should also terminate the actifyd.exe process
    • If the actifyd.exe process is still running, right-click actifyd.exe and click End Process
  3. Start lmtools.exe. (Default location: C:\Program Files\Actify\Floating License Manager)
  4. Select Configuration using Services
  5. Select the Config Services tab and verify the location of the lmgrd.exe and sfpflv2.dat files.(Default location: C:\Program Files\Actify\Floating License Manager)
  6. Open the the Start/Stop/Reread window
  7. Click Start Server
  8. Click ReRead License File, if necessary. If unsure, always do a reread
  9. If starting the service fails, make sure that the floating license processes were terminated (Step 2) and that the path for lmgrd.exe in the Config Services tab is correct
  10. If reread fails:
    • Open the sfpflv2.dat file in a text editor and verify that the first line contains the correct machine name and MAC address (and port number, if relevant)
    • Verify that the is the correct version by opening the Server Status window and checking the status of the server.
Note: lmtools.exe need not be running for the floating license server to be running. Once lmgrd.exe and actifyd.exe are running (verify via Task Manager), lmtools.exe can be closed.
